When I decided to write a composition for euphonium, I listened to a lot of euphonium music first. The warm and round tone of this instrument drew me in and imbued visions and stories of castle life during medieval times.

I started to formulate a series of musical motifs that represent nobility. As a pianist, I could also hear harmonies which would enhance the beautiful tone of the euphonium and I commenced to write a duet.

'A Woman and Her Castle' describes the beauty around me, elegant parties, romantic interludes, tender moments with family, times of strife and a very triumphant ending in which love prevails.
